About Miele dishwasher error code F14

What Miele publishes for it

On a Miele dishwasher, the manufacturer publishes this for the circulation pump is blocked. That sentence is Miele's own, read off its published support page for this condition rather than worked out from the outside. Everything below it — what the condition covers and what is worth doing first — is ours, written from what this equipment does in Miami kitchens.

What this block of conditions is about

The largest block in this archive, and the one with the most conditions an owner can clear without a visit — the water side of a Miele dishwasher reports itself in detail, and several of these numbers mean a filter, a hose or a tap rather than a part.

What it covers

What a published cause names is a circuit rather than a component, which is the single most useful thing to know before anybody orders a part. This one covers:

  • The circulation pump is blocked. In longer breaks between wash/rinse cycles (lasting weeks or months at a time), the pump may become dry and stick together.
  • Risk of scalding.
  • Contact with hot water can cause scalding.
  • Take care with heated water. Do not use excessively hot water (maximum 165°F/75°C).
  • Pour 1 liter of hot water (maximum 165°F/75°C) with 3 to 5 drops of rinse aid into the dishwasher interior.
  • Reinstall the filter combination. Ensure that the filter combination is positioned correctly.
  • Reinstall the lower spray arm.
  • Water intake condition – pump pressure level switch or heating level switch.
  • Water collects in items of dishware (e.g., bowls) when they tip over.
  • Hollow items such as cups, glasses, pans, etc., must be inverted in the baskets.
  • Items of dishware with a concave base should be placed at an angle so that the water can run off.
  • The on-site drainage connection is situated lower than the guide path for the lower basket rollers in the door.
  • For example, in the case of a dishwasher installed at a height, the on-site drainage connection may be situated lower than the guide path for the lower basket rollers in the door.
  • Ventilate the drain as described in the operating instructions for your dishwasher.

Worth trying yourself, in this order

  1. Remove the lower spray arm.
  2. Remove the filter combination.
  3. Leave the solution to soak for 5 minutes.
  4. Restart the program.
  5. Repeat the process 2 to 3 times if necessary.
  6. Turn off the dishwasher.
  7. Wait a few seconds.
  8. Turn the dishwasher back on.
  9. Select the program you want, and then start it.
  10. Make sure that all items of dishware are securely positioned.

Then what

Start with the water, because on a Miele dishwasher this is where the owner's half of the diagnosis lives. The tap, the inlet filter, the hose and the drain account for most of the conditions the machine can report, and all four are reachable without tools. South Florida's water leaves scale in the inlet filter faster than the manual expects, so a filter that was clean a year ago is not clean now.

Miele publishes this one for the dishwashers. The full Miele archive has the other conditions, searchable, and on this make the same number appears on more than one machine roughly a third of the time, so the appliance above is part of the answer.
