Miele range tops

A range top is a cooking deck without an oven under it — thirty-six or forty-eight inches of burners and grates dropped into a counter with a cabinet below. Miele builds them so a kitchen can put its ovens somewhere else and keep the cooking at the island. Above the counter it behaves like a range; below it, everything is different, and that is what decides the visit.

What goes wrong with it

Each one covers the likely causes in the order they are worth checking, and what to do in five minutes before booking anything.

  • A gas burner ring and its white ceramic igniter under a cast grate, no flame lit, the knob turned on
    It clicks and nothing catches

    Gas burner will not light

The appliance will tell you nothing about this — Miele publishes no code for its gas surfaces — so the whole diagnosis is in what the burner does, and the questions on the phone are more detailed for a gas call than for an electric one.

    • Clicks and never catches
    • Lights and goes out a few seconds later
    • One burner out while the others are fine
    What it usually means
  • A stainless pan of raw pork chops standing on a black glass cooktop zone that is not heating
    Part-way through cooking

    Induction zone switches itself off

Usually the overheating protection doing exactly what it was built to do. Miele documents what it does — cancels the Booster, reduces the power level, or switches zones off — and lists the four circumstances that trigger it.

    • A zone dropping power or switching off
    • The Booster canceling itself
    • Worse when the oven underneath is on
    What it usually means
  • A finger on the dark glass of an induction cooktop where a single orange indicator is lit, a pan standing unheated on the zone beside it
The touch panel has stopped answering

    Cooktop controls will not respond

A sensor control reads a wet patch or a pan lid as a finger held down, and locks out. That is the free version. The other version is the touch board, and telling them apart takes five minutes.

    • No response to touch at all
    • A lock symbol that will not clear
    • It works again once the top is cold
    What it usually means

What we do on it

Starting figures for this equipment in South Florida. The exact cost is confirmed after an on-site diagnostic — and this is not the whole list of what can go wrong, so call if your problem is not here.

  • A technician holding a multimeter and touching a probe to a terminal in the wiring behind an appliance, a work light clipped to the cabinet
    from $95

    Diagnostic visit

One visit that ends with a named cause, a figure and a decision — and the fee comes off the bill if you go ahead with the work.

    • Credited against the repair
    • A written figure before anything is ordered
    • Nine appliance types, one rate
    What this involves
  • A technician lifting the brass burner cap off a sealed burner on a stainless rangetop and clearing the injector with a fine wire
    from $225

    Range & rangetop repair

Two appliances sharing a cabinet, and on this make two separate boards. Which half is reporting — the cooking surface or the oven cavity — is the first thing a visit establishes, and saying it on the phone changes what comes on the van.

    • The two halves diagnosed separately, as the appliance reports them
    • Gas conversion and regulator setting handled properly
    • Slide-in appliance drawn out from between stone
    What this involves
  • A technician on a step ladder reaching into the open canopy of a stainless range hood, one grease filter hanging down beside the blower
    from $165

    Range hood repair

The cheap end of the list, honestly. A hum without rotation is usually a capacitor; where the ventilator actually lives — inside the hood, in the ceiling or on the roof — decides the labor and is not visible from the kitchen.

    • Capacitor tested before any motor is quoted
    • Remote and in-line ventilators traced, not assumed
    • Filters and lamps done on the same visit
    What this involves
  • A technician brushing the condenser coil behind the removed plinth grille of a built-in refrigerator, vacuum hose and folded mat on the floor
    from $145

    Appliance maintenance

One visit covering every condenser, filter, descale and seal in the kitchen and the laundry room. In a full Miele household that can be six appliances, and doing them together is meaningfully cheaper than three separate visits.

    • Every appliance in the house on one trip
    • The three things this climate is hard on, all in one visit
    • Water hardness set so the appliances count correctly
    What this involves
  • Two technicians on their knees easing an integrated dishwasher into its cabinet opening, one holding the oak door panel while the other guides the hoses
    from $225

    Appliance installation

Where a meaningful share of the repairs on this site are prevented or created. Ventilation under an induction cooktop, a drain that will actually take a heat-pump dryer, and water at the pressure the maker names as a minimum.

    • Ventilation, drainage and flow pressure checked, not assumed
    • Panel-ready doors hung and set with the panels on
    • Leveling done properly, on every machine
    What this involves

About Miele range tops

Range top, rangetop — one appliance, and it is not a big cooktop

People type it both ways and the maker writes it as one word; either way it is the cooking deck off a range, thirty-six or forty-eight inches wide, set into a counter with cabinetry rather than an oven underneath. Kitchens choose one to put the ovens at eye level somewhere else and keep the burners where the cooking happens.

Above the counter, the repair is a range repair: burners, caps, grates, igniters, valves. Below it, nothing is the same. The controls, the valve bank and the spark module are under the deck in a cabinet, and reaching them means working from inside that cabinet rather than pulling the appliance forward.

What we are called out for

  • A burner that runs but will not simmer — the valve, or a gas supply asked for more than it has when several burners run.
  • Igniters clicking after the burner has lit — moisture, until the deck is dry and it still does it.
  • Uneven flame around one burner — ports, and clearing them costs nothing.
  • Knobs and the front panel, which live directly under the deck in the hottest, most spilled-on place in the kitchen.

The South Florida part

A range top sends its heat down into the cabinet it sits in. In a kitchen that is not conditioned all summer, that cabinet gets warm — and where it shares a run with a wine cabinet or an undercounter refrigerator, the cold appliance is usually the one that complains first. The call arrives about the cold one; the cause is next to it.

What to have ready when you call

The model number from the plate under the deck or behind the kick panel, the width, gas or electric, which burner is affected, and whether the problem is lighting, simmering or the controls.

Questions about Miele range tops

Is a range top the same as a cooktop?

No, and the difference is under the counter rather than on it. A cooktop is a shallow appliance sitting in a cutout, with its controls in the surface. A range top is the deck off a range — heavier, with cast grates edge to edge and knobs on a front panel — and it has a cabinet underneath instead of an oven. Different parts list, different access, and a different appointment.

One burner will not stay low.

A burner that runs but will not simmer is the valve rather than the burner in most cases, and it is worth saying which burner and how low it will go when you book. The other honest possibility on a deck this size is the gas supply being asked for more than it can give when several burners run at once — which is an installation question rather than an appliance one, and we would rather establish it before quoting a part.

The igniter keeps clicking after the burner has lit.

Usually moisture, and usually its own fix: a wiped-down deck that has not fully dried, or a boil-over that ran into the igniter well. It stops once things dry out. What is not self-fixing is clicking that continues on a dry deck, or clicking on a burner that is not the one you turned on — both point at the spark module rather than the burner.

How is it serviced if there is a cabinet underneath?

From below, through that cabinet. The valve bank, the manifold and the spark module sit under the deck, so the appointment includes emptying a cupboard and working in it rather than rolling an appliance out. On a range we pull the appliance forward; on a range top we cannot, and planning for that is why we ask what you have before we arrive.
